Wars always displace people. My mother’s experience as a refugee in her own country during the Indonesian War of Independence reverberated through the rest of her life, even into mine, like ripples spreading across the water. It lasted through four years following Indonesia’s declaration of independence in 1945, as the Dutch tried to re-establish colonial rule. It was a tumultuous period that has a lasting impact even to this day.
